Bayelsa PDP Acting Chairman, George Turnah, MON, Honoured at 2025 Upata Kingdom Traditional Wrestling Season Opening in Rivers State

The Acting Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State and South South Zonal Secretary of the party, Hon. Barr. Alabh George Turnah, MON, today, Saturday, June 21, 2025, graced the 2025 Traditional Wrestling Season Opening Ceremony of Upata Kingdom in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Barr. Turnah, who hails maternally from Edeoha Town in Upata Kingdom, was warmly received at the historic cultural event alongside his wife, Mrs. Jennifer Turnah, and members of the Bayelsa State PDP Caretaker Committee. Their arrival at the ancestral town of Edeoha was met with a resounding welcome by a jubilant crowd of men, women, youth, and traditional rulers, who turned out in large numbers to honour one of their own.

The event, which drew dignitaries, cultural enthusiasts, and residents from within and beyond the region, showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Upata people and reaffirmed their commitment to preserving traditional values through annual sporting and cultural activities such as wrestling; an age-long symbol of strength, unity, and communal pride.

As a longstanding patron and advocate of cultural heritage, Barr. Turnah’s presence at the opening ceremony again, showed his dedication to preserving and promoting indigenous customs. The colourful occasion was marked by cultural displays, traditional music, and wrestling bouts that captivated the audience and highlighted the essence of the season.

Following the ceremony, Barr. Turnah paid a courtesy visit to the palace of the Eze Igbu-Upata III, HRM Eze Dr. Felix Enene Otuwarikpo JP, where he paid homage and reiterated his enduring commitment to the progress and unity of the Upata Kingdom and the wider Niger Delta region.

The visit also provided Barr. Turnah another opportunity to inspect the mausoleum of his late mother in preparation for her 5th-year memorial anniversary, scheduled for July 17, 2025. The emotional moment attracted scores of community members who joined him in a solemn reflection, depicting the deep connection and affection between him and his maternal homeland.

In what became an overwhelming show of love and solidarity, residents, especially women, erupted in songs and dances in honour of their distinguished son, celebrating his humility, achievements, and continued contributions to the community, Bayelsa State, and the PDP at large.

The event further demonstrates Barr. Turnah’s firm belief in cultural inclusivity, community engagement, and the bridging of historical and generational ties that foster unity across ethnic and state lines in the Niger Delta.
